Alzheimer's awareness month

Wednesday, 6 September 2017

September already... although the weather would lead us to believe it's much later in the year.

It really can't make up it's mind, the official last day of Summer is supposed to be the 22nd September but Mother Nature has been in full force all over the globe recently. Hurricanes, storms and then freak sunshine for days on end. Thank fully it hasn't effected too many summer fates. I have spoken to loads of you that have had some great response from summer activities and raised brilliant amounts towards great causes. Pathways at Exemplar Healthcare have been raising money for their new sensory table, which looks amazing. Loads have been raising money for their activities team and sharing some great ideas. We've spoke about Vintage days, new craft ideas, days out. I've also visited some lovely new build homes too. Although talk is now focusing on 'Harvest Festivals', the themes have very much started to turn autumnal just recently, with a lot of people already booking Festive activities.

The countdown in on... 15 weeks 5 days = 2,640 hours...approx anyway...

It's never too early to start thinking of the festive season. The Christmas countdown has already begun. December will be upon on before we know. Some people might already be making plans on where they will spend this holiday and who with. Some people have already started and finished buying gifts.... FYI i am not one of those people... If you work within the care sector you will already know how quickly everyone gets booked up and trying to organise activities and events throughout December or even November can often be quite tricky. In the month of December we do a special 'Festive' themed Motivation & Co. session, all our quizzes, cognitive therapy, exercises and games are all themed around different elements of the winter, festive period. Which is a great opportunity, if you've never had a Motivation & Co. session before, try one of these out as part of your count down.

I have been out and about visiting some of you within your homes, with invites to your open days and the last of the Summer fetes. I feel truly overwhelmed with everyone's kindness at my spontaneously 'popping' by. Your offers of hot drinks have been very much appreciated. Thank you for listening and contributing, whilst I shared my stories of how Motivation & Co. could work alongside your existing in house programmes.

It was Alan's birthday last week and he turned up to do one of his regular sessions in his area (Cambridgeshire) and was greeted with a beautiful birthday cake and a chorus of Happy Birthday from everyone.

Our Motivational Therapists will shortly be feeling the festive buzz as I start handing out the festive essentials and Christmas 'mixes', where we all turn into Karaoke kings and queens. I know that quite a few of the other Motivation & Co. Franchises have already started looking at Christmas booking.  I'll also shortly be organising 'Christmas' meetings and/or parties... Let me know if you have any going on and we may just come along to your Christmas fetes and festivities, if you'll have us. You'll soon start hearing the chimes of Mariah during your weekly shop and the festive menus and drinks will start making an appearance in your favourite food haunts, it's all part of the fun and being very British it then gives us something to moan about, that it starts earlier every year and then in January (the longest month EVER....) when it's all packed away and we're all a little lighter in the pocket and heavier around the waist we can start thinking of resolutions were all going to fail at in the New Year. But the time is 'nigh and we can start organising and planning for our best festive season yet, just let me know if you need a hand.

If you're not sick of the sight of Baileys and/or cinnamon by January, you might not be doing it right.
(Joke.. always drink responsibly... or so I'm told)

I hear a lot of people ask to think of activities that are 'outside the box'. I believe this is missing the point of activities. Activities are to engage and bring together the individuals and groups within the community. They should be person centred, something they can relate to, that will encourage conversation and engagement. Lift spirits and engage in something from the comfort of their own chair should they wish at a time of day that perhaps they wouldn't normally.

World Alzheimer's Month is the international campaign every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. World Alzheimer's Month was launched in 2012. World Alzheimer's Day is on 21 Septembereach year.

2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries. The impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem, that requires global action.

September 2017 will mark the 6th global World Alzheimer's Month, and will utilise the theme of 'Remember me' to highlight the importance of early detection and diagnosis of dementia.

For those perhaps with family members in care, struggling to decide what to buy as a gift, or perhaps you're looking for something other than the much loved but often plentiful toiletries and/or sleep wear. Why not buy a gift that everyone can enjoy and benefit from. We offer Motivation & Co. gift vouchers that can be presented and one off sessions booked and arranged with the residential, nursing, care home or day care centres.  Relatives and friends can join in and all from the comfort of their own lounge or space. Give me a call or contact me to discuss further. Take a look at the 'UK Activities Forum' on Facebook, for everyone to interact and converse together, as well as through the Motivation & Co Nottingham page.

I love seeing all the gorgeous decorations and the involvement of everyone's artistic talents. If you have any pictures that you would like to share with us, please don't hesitate to send them to me at zoeeverett.motivationandco@gmail.com or give me a ring at head office if you want to send them to my mobile via Whats app or messenger, just let me know.
